T-Mobile Edge -> No Go
Category UX280P umpc EDGE
On Friday I signed up for T-Mobile's Total Internet package to gain access to their EDGE network and consolidate that with my current T-Mobile Hotspot account ($10 more than my current account got me EDGE network access, seemed like a good deal.)
Unfortunately, I can't get it to work with my UX280P. I got the EDGE/GPRS card in the UX unlocked (pretty easy considering), but when I plug the T-Mobile SIM card in, I get a vague 'Searching for Network' status message that never goes away. If I plug in the (expensive) Cingular SIM, it does the same thing, except that it ultimately finds a network (usually two networks in my case.) I tested the T-Mobile SIM at a store in a Sidekick and it worked fine, so I am not sure what the problem is.
The EDGE/GPRS card in the UX is a Sony Ericsson GC75 compatible.
I wasn't really happy with the EDGE technology anyway, it is so much slower than the EVDO offered by Verizon and Sprint...but the combo offer of unlimited EDGE and Hotspot access was a good trade off. I think that I will try to convince my boss to allow me to get a SprintPCS phone with a BlueTooth 'Phone as Modem' (PAM) capabilities on a new account and drop my T-Mobile Hotspot account in exchange. That seems like a reasonable option instead.
